Shrine of Remembrance

By Melbourne City Council, Landscape Architect

In 2024, the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne commemorated its 90th anniversary with a series of restoration projects and upgrades.

Anston (then SVC Urban) was commissioned by the City of Melbourne to create 29 custom seat bollards, to be installed as part of the security upgrades at the Shrine, which were funded by the Victorian Government. The bollards were installed by Ace Landscapes in October of that same year.

The seat bollards feature a recessed corrugated surface detail on each vertical face. In addition to their striking visual impact, they are also highly functional, providing seating that is crash-rated for heavy vehicle mitigation. Placed strategically around the Shrine, the seat bollards offer safety and security for pedestrians visiting the historic landmark and precinct.

This was not the first time the SVC Group had been commissioned for a project at the Shrine of Remembrance, with bespoke concrete violets produced for the Ex-Servicewomen’s Memorial Garden in 2011, and concrete pavers installed in the four open walled courtyards surrounding the Shrine in 2003. We are thankful and honoured for the opportunity to contribute to the city’s historic assets and areas of significance.
