Pool Coping Vs. Paving: What's the Difference?

At first glance, you could easily mistake a concrete paver and a concrete pool coper to be exactly the same product.
The difference between these products is subtle, but does exist!

Concrete pavers are used to create paved areas such as walkways, patios or courtyards, while pool copers are used specifically to create the edging around a pool. The key difference between these two products is that the shot-blasted finish of a paver is applied to the top surface only, while a pool coper is shot-blasted to the top surface and one long edge, which is the edge that is visible from inside the pool. Of course, there are also corner pool coping pieces that are shot-blasted on the top and the two visible edges.

Anston’s standard concrete pavers are typically  produced at 46mm thick, while our pool copers are 50mm thick. It’s important to ensure your site levels are prepared to accommodate the difference in thickness when installing pool coping adjacent to paving.

When pricing up concrete pavers, we talk in terms of price per square metre, while pool copers are priced per unit and quantified by the number of lineal metres required (i.e. the perimeter of the pool).

Anston pool coping is available to order in 28 beautiful colours, offering a variety of aesthetic styles such as traditional concrete, sparkling granite or bold exposed aggregate.

Anston's standard finish on all pool coping products is a shot-blasted finish, which highlights the beautiful, sensuous texture of concrete.

Customers can select from a light, medium or heavy level of blasting, where light blasting results in a smoother texture and heavy blasting results in a rougher, grittier textured finish. For products made using our EcoPebble, Ironstone or Mineral Range colours, a heavier level of blasting will reveal more of the stone aggregate in the mix.

Anston does not offer a honed or polished finish for pool coping applications, as this makes the product more slippery which poses a safety risk in a pool environment. Our standard shot-blasted finish achieves the highest slip rating of P5, as per the Australian Standard for slip resistance.

The three types of pool coping edge profiles are square edge, bullnose and dropdown. Square edge copers are available in 50mm and 70mm thicknesses; dropdown copers are available with a 100mm or 180mm drop edge.

Each edge profile style offers a slightly different aesthetic, depending on the design style you'd like to achieve.

All Anston products are made to order, requiring a minimum lead time for production. If you do not have a trading account with Anston, we will not be able to commence production of your order until we receive a deposit payment.

Once the order is confirmed and deposit payment received, the standard lead time for pool coping is 4 weeks. However, this may be impacted by other factors such as order volume, existing work log and delivery location.

To ensure accurate lead times, please confirm with your Anston representative at the time of enquiry.

For best results and long-lasting performance, we highly recommend engaging a professional and experienced landscaping contractor or tiler to install your pool coping. Certified landscaping professionals will be well equipped with the knowledge, tools and expertise to build your new pool.

To prevent movement and cracking, we recommend laying Anston concrete pavers and pool coping on a solid concrete sub-base and using a tile adhesive for optimal adhesion. Expansion joints and control joints should be used to allow for the natural slight movement of the products (in reaction to Australian weather conditions).

For more information, please refer to the Anston Installation and Maintenance Guide.

Yes, Anston concrete pool coping can be installed adjacent to other flooring materials to create a subtle or bold contrast in the poolscape.

It's important to be aware of the different expansion rates of different materials in the outdoor environment, i.e. concrete, stone and timber. Expansion joints must be incorporated into the paving design to allow for some movement and to prevent cracking.

Yes, Anston pool coping is commonly used for a variety of other outdoor applications such as wall capping and step coping. The versatility of our product range allows you to pursue creative expression and freedom!

Anston paving and pool coping products are produced using the same concrete mix designs. However, in certain instances, there may be a slight colour variation in the paving and pool coping when produced in the same colour.

This is due to the different techniques used to create the blasted finish of the pavers and copers - pavers are shot-blasted using an automated process while pool copers are hand-blasted using a water blaster.

As a result, the pool copers may still retain some moisture when they arrive onsite, causing them to look different from the pavers (which have not been blasted with water).

Rest assured that this colour variance is only temporary, and will correct over time as the pool copers dry out.
