Why Precast Concrete Is Optimal For Outdoor Signage Projects

Concrete is a reliable material for outdoor signage applications due to its durability, design flexibility and timeless appeal. Combining function with form, precast concrete signage elements deliver striking results that elevate the overall landscape or architectural aesthetic.

Key benefits of selecting architectural precast concrete for use in outdoor signage applications:

  • Exceptional Strength and Durability: Precast concrete is built to last. Unlike timber or metal alternatives, concrete signage won’t warp, rust, or degrade over time. It’s highly resistant to weather, UV exposure, impact, and vandalism, making it ideal for long-term use in the outdoors.
  • Design Flexibility: Concrete can be cast into virtually any shape or profile, whether it’s a rectilinear style of flat planes and straight edges or asymmetric forms that assume more organic shapes. Designers can choose from a range of colours, aggregate options and textured surface finishes to achieve a visual result that suits the material palette and overarching design style of the space.
The natural surface of concrete also provides a blank canvas for creative typography, graphics and branding, with techniques such as imprinting, stencilling, adding inlays or other cast-in elements providing further opportunity for customisation.
  • Seamless Integration into the Landscape: Concrete signage pairs beautifully with natural and built environments. Whether used the material is used itself as a standalone feature, or incorporated with other elements into walls, plinths or free-standing forms, concrete signs blend easily and seamlessly into multiple environments such as public parks, schools, community spaces, residential estates and commercial developments.
  • Proudly Made in Melbourne: All Anston architectural concrete signage elements are manufactured locally in Melbourne using 100% Australian materials. This ensures fast lead times, consistent quality and responsive support  from the Anston team throughout the duration of your project. By working with a local manufacturer, you also support Australian craftsmanship and reduce the environmental footprint associated with overseas importation.

Concrete Signage: Frequently Asked Questions

As every request we take for concrete signage is for a custom-made product, the product colour is also completely up to the client's  own discretion.

Anston can assist in the sourcing of coloured oxides or special aggregate materials to help customers create a unique concrete mix design. Please note that custom mix designs outside our typical colour range will incur additional fees.

For the most cost-effective colour options for concrete signage, please refer to the 12 beautiful colours in our Mineral Range (listed on our Colour Range page) which are the standard options on offer for large-format concrete signs, furniture and landscape elements.

For custom products, Anston can manufacture single units up to 10T in weight. Spatially speaking, we can manufacture any product that is able to fit on a B-double truck, i.e. up to 2.4m wide (2 pallet spaces).

When designing your custom signage product, designers must factor in the delivery and installation process, as the product will need to be lifted, handled and transported safely from Anston's manufacturing premises to the project site, to be loaded and unloaded at each end.

If you require a large-format signage product outside these weight or dimensional specifications, you may consider dividing the product into separate parts to ensure it is still viable for precast production.

Anston's standard, most popular finish for all our concrete products is a shot-blasted finish, which highlights the beautiful, sensuous texture of concrete.

Customers can select from a light, medium or heavy level of shot-blasting. Light blasting results in a smoother texture and heavy blasting results in a rougher, grittier textured finish.

For products made using our Mineral Range colours, a heavier level of blasting will reveal more of the stone aggregate in the mix.

Depending on the design, certain signage products may also be produced in a smooth, off-mould/off-form finish. This finish is achieved when products are stripped out of the moulds with no further treatments applied to the surface. This produces a very industrial concrete aesthetic and is most suited to large-format, flat edged products as opposed to curved products, due to the presence of visible seam lines from moulding.

Rectilinear products may be further enhanced with a honed finish, where the surface of a shot-blasted product is ground to remove the roughness of the shot-blasted texture. This achieves a silky smooth finish that is pleasing to the touch.

Honed signage products can be treated a step further to produce a polished finish, which uses finer grits to grind the surface, making it even smoother with a shiny, glossy appearance.

As an indicative price guide, the most cost-effective finish options for concrete signage is an off-form finish, followed by shot-blasting, honing and then polishing.

No, Anston does not offer any standard products for concrete signage. Outdoor signage projects that incorporate precast concrete elements typically require unique, one-of-a-kind design styles that are specific to the project.

It is difficult to provide a standard lead time on custom-made signage products due to several variables including order volume, availability of raw materials and coloured oxides, and the complexity of mould fabrication, to name a few.

Compared with purchasing a standard product from our design-ready catalogue range, orders of custom products incur additional lead times for design development, workshop drawings and approvals, mould design and fabrication. These processes typically add a minimum of 6 weeks' lead time, and are subject to change.

Please consult Anston directly so we can provide more accurate lead times based on your specific project requirements.

The impressive entrance to Lilium Estate welcomes visitors to the community with a monumental concrete feature wall, announcing the name of the estate in bold, imprinted lettering.

Closer inspection of the large signage reveals the exquisite detailing of shot-blasted circles at varying sizes across the concrete surface, creating a rippling effect of exposed bluemetal aggregates.
