The public opening of the Colours Stairway at Flemington Racecourse marked the successful completion of the Victorian Racing Club’s $135 million Club Stand precinct redevelopment. Championed by commercial joinery specialist Jacaranda Industries, the project was completed in October 2019, ready for the vibrant festivities of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
The Colours Stairway offers improved accessibility into the racecourse, creating a pathway for pedestrian transition from the train station down into the betting ring. Demonstrating architectural beauty and construction excellence, the 5.6-metre wide terraced stairway is constructed from bespoke concrete stair treads, locally produced by Anston (then SVC Urban). The stair treads feature a tapering cantilevered edge on each side, creating an eye-catching sawtooth design.
At dusk, the stairway becomes even more captivating, illuminated by ambient lighting that highlights its exquisite detail. The impressive result of this significant project was made possible by an exceptional team of contractors and suppliers.
