Chandler Streetscape Upgrade, Parkdale

By City of Kingston, Local Government Area

Nestled in a colourful corner of Parkdale, the Chandler Street shopping precinct offers various eateries, stores and beauty services for locals.

In 2022, the City of Kingston embarked on an Outdoor Activation Program that included an upgrade to the shopping strip, enhancing the environment with permanent outdoor fixtures to increase foot traffic post-COVID. Recognising the importance of local shopping strips for community engagement, the council designed permanent spaces for outdoor dining and children’s play, hoping to increase community interaction that would support Parkdale traders.

As part of the precinct upgrade, Anston (then SVC Urban) was contracted to supply a series of concrete planters to form up a protected pedestrian area on the road surface, effectively extending the footprint of the on-site eateries. Installed alongside concrete blocks, these robust concrete elements create a functional and visually appealing physical boundary for the space.

Strategically placed, both the concrete planters and blocks serve as effective vehicle deterrents while allowing easy passage for pedestrians and cyclists. Their solid construction ensures long-term resilience with minimal maintenance requirements, aligning with the council’s broader goals for safe, accessible, and attractive public infrastructure.
