University Square Carlton

By Melbourne City Council, Landscape Architect

One of Carlton’s oldest and most loved public squares, University Square has recently transitioned from a 19th-century space into a modern, engaging landscape.

The City of Melbourne, the Victorian Government and the University of Melbourne joined forces on a detailed master plan to transform the square, aiming to turn the space into a 21st century park that would respond to the needs of its changing environment.

Anston (then SVC Urban) was contracted to supply several bespoke concrete seating modules and stair units, that would bridge the gap between the footpath and raised central lawn. The units were manufactured in a beautiful exposed aggregate concrete mix and honed for a smooth surface texture.

For this project, slip resistance testing was carried out to ensure that the concrete stair units achieved the highest possible slip rating, ensuring safe pedestrian use.
