The Shrine of Remembrance underwent redevelopment in 2002 where special consideration was given to the positioning of the new entrance, the establishment of a Visitor’s Centre and improved Administration facilities.
The construction of the new additions, designed by ARM Architecture, included the creation of four walled courtyards, a Visitor Centre and gallery under the northern steps. The paving selected for the landscaping upgrade was a sleek grey colour from the Gattistone range by SVC, a durable and attractive range of concrete pavers that were later superseded by Anston’s paving range after the merger of the two companies in 2017.
Laid extensively throughout the new courtyards, the Gattistone pavers provide a lasting, solid foundation in the beautiful memorial spaces.
The successful redevelopment transformed this iconic Melbourne monument into an exhibition space and educational centre for visiting locals and tourists alike. A landmark of great importance to the memory of all those servicemen and women of Australia.
