A series of 600dia concrete spheres graces the entry to the Westfield Knox Shopping Centre.
Installed in 2023 as part of an upgrade to the heavy vehicle mitigation (HVM) system, 36 Dune spheres occupy the perimeter of the shopping centre, creating a subtle threshold between the outdoor carpark and pedestrian walkways.
Rather than relying on more traditional, heavy handed security infrastructure, this project embraces the use of smooth, sculptural concrete spheres that act as a passive barrier system. They are strategically placed to prevent vehicle encroachment while maintaining pedestrian accessibility, making them an optimal addition to any highly trafficked area.
The spheres not only provide improved safety for pedestrians but also increase the overall aesthetic of the shopping centre, demonstrating how a highly considered approach to HVM can enhance rather than distract from the surrounding landscape.
