Anzac Station is one of Melbourne’s newest railway stations on the new Metro Tunnel line, which will create a new end-to-end rail line connecting Sunbury in the west to Cranbourne/Pakenham in the south east.
Positioned on St Kilda Road, the new Anzac Station connects passengers to the Domain precinct, the Shrine of Remembrance, and surrounding parklands. The design of the station nods to its civic and commemorative setting, using natural materials, sweeping lines and open spaces.
To complement that design language, Anston was engaged to create two custom concrete totem signs for the station precinct. Standing at 1.5m high, the two sign bases are impressive twisting sculptures with a custom wave pattern carved into the edges. The flowing detail creates a sense of movement and rhythm that feels at home in the station’s landscaped forecourt, while also helping to anchor the station’s signage in a visually interesting and tactile way.
Each piece was handcrafted from architectural concrete, with crisp detailing and a soft finish that fits neatly into the broader palette of stone, steel and timber used throughout the project. These signs don’t just mark the station, they contribute to the identity of the space and help guide people as they move through it.
The result was a small but meaningful part of a much larger project and one that shows how custom concrete can offer something practical, lasting and quietly beautiful in our public environments.
