Laying pavers on pedestals is generally seen as a quicker and easier method of installation. Here are some key benefits of using pedestal paving:
- Significant time and cost savings arise as the use of grouting, caulking and bonding agents becomes unnecessary. Pedestals and pavers are simply lifted into place.
- The absence of grout eliminates the concern of grout smear that is often present in a typical paving installation, resulting in a cleaner and neater paved finish.
- Drainage levels can be incorporated into the paving sub-base, allowing a perfectly level finished surface.
- Any plumbing, electrical or communications services can be run underneath the paving and are easily accessed when required by lifting out only the relevant pavers. Once access is no longer required, pavers are just as easily lifted back into place.
It is important to note that the installation of paving on pedestals is not covered in the current Australian Standard. The conditions for pavers that are compliant with the Breaking Load requirements apply to a traditional installation only, meaning that compliant pavers may not necessarily fare as well when they are laid in a pedestal installation.
Anston is the only Australian supplier who has developed a reinforced paving solution designed specifically for pedestal paving applications. Though our standard paving solutions already meet all the Breaking Load requirements in the Australian Standard, we have added extra steel reinforcing to all pavers that are to be used in a pedestal system. This helps to ensure that the structural integrity of each pedestal paver is maintained, even if the paver is subjected to a high impact load (i.e. the force of someone falling, or dropping a heavy item).
