Toorak Residence

By Jack Merlo, Landscape Designer

Jack Merlo Design worked with Catt Architects to design a sleek modern back garden for this 1930’s home, effortlessly blurring the lines between inside and out.

A new pool was poured into the existing pool cavity, raising the levels to allow the edges to sit flush with adjoining paving.  Corners were squared off and the pool was laid with a darker tile, creating depth and reflecting beautifully.  A sequence of tall stone water features face the home’s living areas, offering visual and textural interest.

Evergreen Figs line the pool’s boundary, providing screening to the adjoining double-storey residence.  Other planting was kept simple, with Bradford Pears underplanted with Dwarf Mondo framing the area.  Mass plantings of Gardenia and Star Jasmine release perfume, while Liriope and Agaves add foliage and flower appeal.  An undercover timber deck invites year round use and extensive outdoor lighting transforms the evening garden into a stunning backdrop to the home.

“Jack Merlo Design has created one of the most referenced residential poolscapes in Australia.”
